Award winning artist Marion Barnett is ninety-one years old and is still driven by the creative spirit that she loves so much. Her creative enthusiasm for life and art has continually found its way into the many works of art that Marion produces. Marion says: “Keep an open mind about artistic expression. Use line, form, space, texture and color with your imagination.”
Born in Denver, Colorado, Marion is the daughter of Wilfred Ernest Pape –the son of the wealthy English businessman Edward Pape (an early founder of the Prudential Insurance Company). In 1924 the Marion family moved to Santa Barbara, California. An avid reader and drawer, Marion was able to skip the fifth grade. During that time, she fell in love with music and the ethnic Spanish flavor of the area. Early art projects included posters for the Santa Barbara Spanish Fiesta season. Ms. Barnett completed high school in the Sacramento area and moved to Oakland at eighteen years of age.
In the late 1950’s, Marion was a divorced single mother with two young boys. With insurmountable odds against her, she managed the family, worked several jobs and attended the CaliforniaCollege of Arts & Crafts for three years (near Oakland, CA). At the time of her art studies, the college presented many of her works in the student exhibitions.
Marion Barnett sites European artist Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) as a major influence. Her abstract art compositions –full of bright colors and flowers- reflect this early guidance. Marian says; “I am a dreamer and I relate well to two Frank Sinatra song titles. They are, Fairy Tails -can come true and I’ll Do it- My Way.” Over the years, Marion has also supplemented her income by creating Christmas season crafts and many other artistic creations.
Marion Barnett currently resides at Kindred Health Care facility in the city of Orange, California.
