Cowboy Artist to the Stars: Albert Lee Shelton
Biography
June 27, 1920 - March 22, 2016
Al Shelton was a cowboy & ranch hand in Colorado, Nebraska and surrounding states. Al moved to California in 1943 to work for Bohlin Saddle Makers. He subsequently left Bohlin and became a subcontractor for Nudie Western Tailors and Hollywood actors and stuntmen.
Western Artist Al Shelton created works in carved leather, bronze & silver sculpture, watercolor and oil. In addition, many prints were made of Al's artwork. One of Al's most famous customers was none other than the famous cowboy singer Gene Autry. Al made many leather and sculpted items for Gene Autry. In fact, dozens of creations by Al Shelton are on display at the Autry National Center (formerly the Autry Museum of Western Heritage).
